“I felt like I had won a golden ticket”

29 November 2019

We were treated to a moving speech at today's AGM from Inscape student, Ethan, where he talked about how much of a difference the Together Trust and staff at Inscape have made to his life. Around 40 people were at the event, including staff, trustees, governors and Salford ceremonial mayor and Stockport ceremonial mayors and mayoress.

Ethan spoke with confidence and humour. When speaking about finding the Together Trust he told us: "I felt like I was in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I had won a golden ticket". His speech was full of admiration for the staff that have supported him and he gave encouragement to his peers at Inscape. It was heart-warming to see the support from the audience and at times there wasn't a dry eye in the room.

Showcasing his artwork, Ethan spoke clearly, exploring the details and symbols woven into his complex, layered images and stories. He described the journey he had been on and how staying focused on his creativity had helped him in his struggle to overcome emotional obstacles. He also spoke about how far he had come since leaving mainstream education and the achievements he has made at Inscape House School, in particular gaining art, English and maths at GCSE.

Ethan’s mum Jennie told us: “About a year ago Ethan had been diagnosed with Narcolepsy and Cataplexy, his meds were all over the place and he wasn't doing too well at college or in his home life, It was a very hard time for him, he was very down at this point.

“Today, Ethan couldn't be more different. We all agree that Inscape has played a big part in this change. The school has brought out talents Ethan never knew he had. His confidence has grown massively. As a result, it’s overflowed into his family life.

Cheering Ethan on were Alexandra Pritchard, a special education assistant at Inscape House School and Cathy Malcolm, his art teacher. Alexandra said: “I have seen the progress Ethan has made with his work and witnessed how much his confidence has increased.

“Ethan was fully prepared, looking extremely smart and feeling a mixture of excitement and trepidation. He had planned carefully and was well organised with his notes all printed out. Ethan’s professional approach and calm conduct were very impressive."

Well done and thank you to Ethan for talking to us today.
