Newbridge Centre’s journey of fundraising for a garden makeover
This summer, a dedicated team from the Together Trust have been combining fitness and fun in aid of its community centre for disabled children and adults in Stockport – raising over a grand so far towards the centre’s accessible garden makeover.
In August, staff took part in an inflatable 5k obstacle challenge which raised over a grand for the Newbridge Centre, a day centre in Stockport, particularly for a garden makeover to make it more welcoming and accessible outdoor space for the adults and children it supports with learning disabilities, autism, and complex health needs.
“The impact on our young people is that they have a positive place to come and be themselves whilst having fun, learn new skills and socialise with their peers and staff; it provides an environment where they can thrive,” shares Tracey Heath, Administrator at Newbridge.
The day service caters to 65 adults from Monday to Friday, runs an autism youth club three evenings a week, and hosts a Saturday club for children with complex health needs.
“Most of the young people who attend have done so for several years and see Newbridge as a big part of their lives. We provide activities that are centre based, and community based from our singing and signing group to our cycling group, there are many groups to access all aimed at improving the quality of life of all our young people,” says Tracey.
The fundraising efforts for the garden renovation has been a journey of community involvement, kicking off in May with a table top sale, followed by a disco evening for service users, families, and friends in early August and culminating with the inflatable 5k challenge. This has brought the total funds raised to over two thousand pounds.
