Jamie's Story
Jamie was referred to our service by his mother at 2 ½ years due to concerns about his lack of speech. Initially the Speech and Language therapist met Jamie’s mum to discuss her concerns and gain information about Jamie’s developmental history.
The following home-based session comprised observation and play-based assessment of Jamie’s language and communication skills. Jamie was a little reserved initially but soon began to explore the toys and to interact with the therapist.
We discovered that Jamie needed help to learn to listen to sounds and voice and that his understanding of words was compromised.
The therapist worked closely with Jamie and his mum at home on a weekly basis, providing practical ideas and resources. She also liaised with key staff at Jamie’s playgroup, suggesting strategies to support Jamie’s communication skills.
We reviewed Jamie’s progress after 8 weeks; his mum had noticed a significant improvement in Jamie’s listening and concentration. The family had simplified the language they used when speaking to Jamie and had played games to focus on developing his understanding of single words. His mum reported that Jamie was much calmer now and less prone to temper tantrums. His understanding of key words is improving and he is responding to sounds more consistently.
All our Speech and Language Therapists are members of the Royal College of Speech and Language (RCSLT), are registered with the Health Professions Council and undertake postgraduate training and learning.
