Students learn life lessons on Duke of Edinburgh expedition
Between 30 April and 2 May, students from Ashcroft School and Inscape House School successfully completed their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions.
This group of four determined youngsters embarked on a journey from Hope Valley to Rowarth, trekking nearly 30 km and enjoying breathtaking views along the way. While the expedition graced them with picturesque landscapes, it also tested their endurance with strong winds and unexpectedly warm weather, making their journey more challenging. However, the young enthusiasts' resilience and determination shone through, allowing them to tackle these obstacles with grit and grace. Despite their weary legs and blistered feet, they remained in high spirits.
The staff and young people's campsites at Upper Booth and Hayfield, both brimming with natural beauty, offered much-needed respite for their weary legs and a space to bond over self-made meals and beverages. The staff relished the 'waiter service' offered by one of the students, Arnas, who proudly showcased his new stove by providing a steady flow of hot beverages.
“Be that staying away from home, being able to adapt and strive in unfamiliar environments, or having to show resilience and teamwork with young people they may not normally socialise with.”
The memorable expedition culminated with hearty congratulations to our students Chris, Arnas, Ryan, and Kyra. A special note of gratitude was extended to the staff team, Shane and Tom, for their much-needed support at checkpoints, always ready with water, food, and a well-timed joke to lighten the mood.
"We all had a great time and finished with memories that we will treasure for a long time," says Neale.
The question now is, what adventures will the next year bring? Students who have achieved their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award are looking forward to completing their Silver and Gold Award next year, whilst other pupils will have the thrilling opportunity to start their Duke of Edinburgh pathway.
