Latest campaigning actions around voting in the general election
In light of the upcoming general election, we've kickstarted our mission to raise awareness about the right to vote and the voting process.
Over the last few weeks, we reached out to our services and explained our intention in raising awareness to young people about their right to vote and the voting process.
We shared resources and information by My Vote My Voice campaign with all services and across social media.
‘‘Registering to vote’’ sessions
Last week, staff from the Campaigns and Communications team visited Bridge College and Newbridge Centre. Staff engaged in a discussion with young people about their right to vote, the voting process, and the key deadlines ahead of the general election.
During our visit to Newbridge, people coming to our table had varying levels of interest and knowledge: some were keen to learn more, and some took information to keep reading afterward.
By the end of the session at Bridge College, all students were certain that they were eligible to vote, understood the importance of voting, and the upcoming deadlines for the general election. Among the issues we discussed was:
Why do you think lots of disabled people are not voting?
The young people talked about inaccessible information about voting, inaccessible manifestos, and inaccessible polling stations. Indeed, these are some of the barriers hindering disabled peoples from exercising their legal right to vote.
Mock voting activity
During both visits, we engaged the young people in a mock voting activity, during which the young people had the chance to see how they could vote by using a fake ballot paper and putting their paper in the polling box.
